Thank you Nneka.

Thank you Nneka.

Nneka, I heard Heartbeat for the first time about 2 weeks ago and I cried. The last time that happened, I was listening to Ms. Lauryn Hill's Unplugged. I am from Hip Hop and it touched me so much to see it rekindled and speaking the truth to me. I thought the Hip Hop in me died with all the misrepresentation of HIp Hop that is so alive in the world today but then I heard "Heartbeat" and started digging up all my old Hip Hop albums..BDP, KRS-One, Black Starr, Common Sense, etc., and anything that encouraged self-love. Although you were introduced to Hip-Hop only 5 years ago, you live it perfectly, but then again we Black Americans come from you, The Mother Africa. In turn Hip Hop IS African.

Your music also made me question who I really am and my motives. It brought me back to blackness and my true self, and by that I mean I stop trying so hard to assimilate and structure myself around the "American" ideal. I am back to embracing who I was born to be and loving every inch of my Black self, no apologies. That's the seed your music help plant in me. I love you dearly sister. And thank you.

With love,
Khadijah
